Christine
Calow
Christine
Calow is inspired by travel, which is explored through the interaction of
shapes and colour relationships.
Her
recent work originates in two mixed media paintings, ‘Marusthali’ and ‘Jaipur’
which draw their main inspiration from the exhuberance and richness of Indian
and Sri Lankan art and architecture. Both
paintings, which combine painting, printing and collage, share a similar
composition, but one is composed of floating semi-transparent squares of
colour, and the other of opaque solid shapes.
The
development and exploration of compositions and arrangements of squares
suggested by ‘Marusthali’ and ‘Jaipur’ has led to a series of
vibrantly coloured and expressive oil pastel studies.
Christine
uses colour in exciting combinations to create atmosphere and mood and a
sense of mystery. Colour is used to create illusions in front of the spectator’s
eye. Shapes appear to move and
hover, and colour appears to create three-dimensional effects.
